The Experience

Equally as important as the quality of the portraits you receive from our session, is your experience while we are working together.

Uncomfortable in front of the camera?

I completely understand and relate.  That's why when we shoot together, it's really about hanging out and having a good time- there just happens to be a camera there.  We want to elicit genuine smiles and expressions and that only happens when we are relaxed and comfortable.  Helping you feel that way is my first priority.

Unsure how to express or describe what you are looking for?

I'll help walk you through examples and give you a common vocabulary we can use to get the vision out of your head and into the tangible world.  I also have clients who just want to be "the muse" and let me work my magic!  I'm happy to create for you and capture the beautiful piece of art you are!

The Photographer

My name is Val.

Obscura Organica Studios and OO Designs are my daily passion.  My craft makes me forget I need sleep.  It makes me excited for every day.  It makes me proud of who I am and what I can create.

I'm a scientist by training and a photographer by experience.  I believe these two disciplines have molded by appreciation for the technical art of photography and blend to give me the attention to detail needed to capture the unique beauty of special moments.

As a professional photographer and proud member of the PPA (Professional Photographers Association),  I continuously strive to expand my mastery of different styles and techniques so that my clients' visions are not limited by my personal preferences.  If I'm not challenging myself to try something new, I feel I am not growing as an artist.

My Story

( the longer version)

Self-reflection can be difficult...

But at some point I realized I was convinced by others that it wasn't possible or responsible to pursue something you loved as a career.  I spent over a decade keeping photography and creating relegated to being "my hobby".

After my son was born, something in my heart shifted.  I knew that in order for me to be truly supportive of him as he chased his dreams through life, I would have to live by my own words.  From there on, I've built my dream with him in mind every day.

Then sometimes things happen.  Little signs to tell you- "you made the right move, keep going".

Two years into my journey professionally pursuing photography, my grandfather passed away.  He was one of those "larger than life" personalities.  Everyone of my friends  had a story to tell about him, after meeting him only for a few hours at my wedding.  While going through his old boxes of albums for a photo collage for the funeral, I came across a picture that really stood out to me and I put it aside as a contender for the center picture and one we might use for the obituary.

Later, putting the funeral details together, I saw a note scrawled on the back of that picture.  It read "31 OCT '84  VALERIE's FIRST PICTURE - GRANDPOP".  I was  2 years old...

I cried my eyes out and felt such an intense sadness that I couldn't give my grandfather a hug for  the first time since I was a little girl.  I wish I could share every photo I am genuinely proud of with my grandparents, but I'm grateful everyday that I have my son to share this journey with.
